A Good Infrastructure Doesn’t Work If You Don’t Work It!

I believe that really successful people either have a strong infrastructure or have people that manage their infrastructure for them.  What do I mean by infrastructure?

According to Webster’s dictionary, Infrastructure is the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities needed for the operation of a society or enterprise.

More specifically, it’s the tools you use to work on what’s there for you to do.  It’s anything that you use on a daily basis to get things done.  This includes your cell phone, schedule, existence system, and software.  Your infrastructure supports you in managing all incoming information, action items, meetings, phone calls and stuff.

“Stuff is anything you have allowed into your psychological or physical world that doesn’t belong where it is, but for which you haven’t yet determined the desired outcome and the next action step.” – David Allen, Getting Things Done

If you want to increase your productivity then upgrade your infrastructure!

How to get started with your infrastructure:

Take a look at what you currently have.  Look to see what works about what you currently have and what doesn’t work.  Ask yourself what kind of system you would like to use.  Most people resist implementing something new, its ok!  Keep asking yourself what would make things easier and fun for you.  It can be as simple as having a notepad and pen.  What matters is what’s going to best support you. What matters is that you stick with your system long enough that you feel like you can trust it to remind you of things.  What matters is that you’re not keeping things in your head.

Be curious.  Investigate what will work for you.   Ask other people that you think are producing results what they use, what they like about it and what they don’t like about it.
